QIF to CSV Converter Online Free — (No Download, Mac or PC)

Leaving Quicken, Microsoft Money or Moneydance, with years of history in a .qif nothing else will open? Convert QIF to CSV online free and it comes back as rows: one per transaction, every split part on a row of its own, each account named. This QIF to CSV converter runs in the browser you already have, so there is no freeware to download and the file is read on your own machine.

Why Use Our QIF to CSV Converter Tool?

Every split part gets a row

A payment split three ways becomes three rows, each with the date and payee repeated and a shared Txn # to group them. No orphan lines.

Each account keeps its name

A full export holding checking, a card and savings gets an Account column, so the three never blur into one list.

Nothing to install

The QIF is read and converted inside this browser tab, on Windows, Mac or Linux. No installer, no Java, no licence key.

How to convert QIF to CSV in your browser

1

Export the .qif

In Quicken for Windows that is File, Export, QIF File; in Money and Moneydance it is File, Export. Pick one account or all of them. Lists in the file are fine.

2

Upload the QIF

Drop the file on the box above. It is read section by section, the lists are set aside, and the transactions appear as a table you can check before you download.

3

Pick the date order, take the CSV

One choice: month-first or day-first dates, whichever the program receiving the CSV expects. The download follows it, and so does the table on screen.

One split transaction, from QIF to CSV

A bill split between two categories is one record in the QIF and two rows in the CSV. Each row repeats the date, payee and cheque number, and the shared Txn # puts the payment back together.

In the .qif

In the .csv

03/20/2024CITY UTILITIES-40.00Utilities:WaterWater only10242 of 22

The two amounts add up to the $120.00 paid, and there is no third row carrying the total, so a sum of the Amount column counts the bill once. If a file's parts do not add up to its total, the difference gets an uncategorised row of its own.

Why a QIF file is hard to convert to CSV

The year sits behind an apostrophe

The QIF date format is Quicken's own: 2/24'2005 or 1/ 5'24, padded with a space, the year after an apostrophe. A reader that splits on slashes alone cannot parse it and drops the row. Nor does a QIF say whether 3/4 is March or April, so every row is checked for a day above 12, which settles the order for the whole file.

A full export is not just transactions

Ask Quicken for everything and the file also holds your category list, memorized payees and an account list. Converted naively, every category becomes a row with its description sitting in the Date column. Those sections are recognised and left out, so only the transactions reach the CSV.

Transfers look like categories

A move between your own accounts is written with the other account in square brackets, such as [Savings], in the category field. It comes through exactly that way, so you can filter the brackets out before totalling what you actually spent.

Investment records use other letters

An investment register swaps payee and category for an action, a security, a quantity and a price. A bank-shaped CSV has nowhere to put them, so investment accounts get their own columns: Action, Security, Quantity, Price and Commission.

What a QIF file looks like, letter by letter

What does a QIF file look like? No columns. Every line starts with a letter saying what it holds, and a caret ends the transaction. This is how each letter in the record above becomes a CSV column.

Who needs a QIF to CSV converter today

Leaving Quicken

You can export Quicken to CSV through a report, but split lines arrive with no date or payee. Export a QIF once, convert it here, and every row is whole.

Still on Microsoft Money

Money has not been updated since 2010. Its QIF export still works, and a CSV is the safest place to keep what it holds before the PC it runs on goes.

Moving to a budgeting app

Many budgeting apps and spreadsheet trackers import CSV but not QIF. The rows arrive with payee, category and memo in their own columns. New bank downloads in OFX go through the OFX to CSV converter.

Settling an estate

A relative's Quicken file is often the only record of their accounts. A CSV opens on any computer, for the executor, the accountant or the family.

Answering the tax office

Filter a year, total a category, and send the spreadsheet. Split payments show the part that was deductible instead of a single lump.

Using it as a QIF viewer

The table appears on screen before anything downloads, so this works as a QIF file viewer when you only need to look something up.

Exporting a QIF from Quicken, Money and Moneydance

No bank has offered QIF downloads for years, so the file in your hands was written by a finance program. Which one matters: some still export QIF, one stopped, and one never did.

Quicken for WindowsYesExport: File → Export → QIF FileTicking every list adds categories and memorized payees to the file. They are skipped here, so tick what you like.
Quicken for MacNot since 2015Writes QMTF instead, with no investment records. A QIF from Quicken 2007 for Mac or a Windows copy converts normally.
Microsoft MoneyYesExport: File → Export → Loose QIFA closed account is not offered for export. Reopen it first, export, then close it again.
MoneydanceYesExport: File → Export → QIFOn a Mac the command is under the Moneydance menu. One file for all accounts or one per account both convert.
GnuCashNoReads QIF but never writes it. If GnuCash holds the data, its own CSV export is the shorter route.

Frequently Asked Questions — QIF to CSV Converter

QWhat program opens a QIF file?

Quicken, Microsoft Money, Moneydance, GnuCash and KMyMoney all import one. To read it without any of them, convert the QIF file to CSV: the table on this page shows the transactions before you download, up to 200 rows, which makes it a quick online QIF viewer. Any text editor works as a QIF file reader too, but you will see letter codes, not columns.

QCan Excel open QIF files directly?

Not as a spreadsheet. A QIF is plain text with one field per line, each starting with a letter: D for the date, T for the amount, P for the payee. Open a QIF file in Excel and all of it goes down column A. Convert QIF to CSV first and each of those fields lands in its own column, or use the QIF to Excel converter for a workbook whose amounts already total. A bank download in OFX has the same problem, and the OFX to Excel converter solves it the same way.

QHow do I export a QIF from Quicken for Windows?

File, Export, QIF File. Choose the account, or all accounts, set the date range, and tick what to include. Transactions alone is enough for a CSV. If you also tick the account, category or memorized payee lists, that is fine; this converter skips them.

QCan I convert QIF to CSV on a Mac?

Yes. Nothing installs, so you can convert QIF to CSV on a Mac in Safari, Chrome or Firefox, exactly as on Windows. Getting the QIF is the harder part on a Mac. Quicken for Mac has had no QIF export since 2015 and writes QMTF instead, which is a different file. A QIF from Quicken 2007 for Mac, or from a Windows copy, converts normally.

QWhy are my QIF dates a hundred years off?

Because the apostrophe was ignored. In Quicken's convention 3/18'19 means 2019 and 3/18/19 means 1919, so a tool that drops the apostrophe can land a century out. This converter reads apostrophe years the way Quicken writes them and outputs a full four-digit year.

QDo split transactions survive the conversion?

Each split part becomes its own row. Date, payee, cheque number and account are repeated on every row, so you can sort and filter safely, and a Txn # column groups the parts of one payment. There is no extra total row, so a sum of the Amount column stays correct.

QCan I convert a QIF with several accounts?

Yes, and they stay apart. An Account column is added, named from the file, and every row says which account it came from. Filter on it before you total anything, or the sum will mix your checking with your card. A file holding one account gets no extra column.

QDoes it work with investment QIF files?

Yes. Investment registers get Action, Security, Quantity, Price and Commission columns alongside Date and Amount. A file holding both bank and investment accounts keeps both sets of columns, and each row fills the ones that apply to it.

QIs there a QIF to CSV converter freeware download?

There are desktop programs, and the well-known ones are paid, some needing Java. This page needs nothing installed and converts the same file in the browser. A download only earns its place if you have dozens of files to batch at once.

QIs my QIF file uploaded?

No. The QIF is read and converted inside this browser tab, and no copy of your transactions goes to a server to be processed. That matters more than usual here, since a QIF is often years of someone's finances in one file.

QHow do I turn the CSV back into a QIF?

Use the CSV to QIF converter, which writes a file Quicken will import with File, File Import, QIF File. Edit the CSV first if you need to: rename payees, fix categories, delete rows. Kept your edits in a workbook instead? The Excel to QIF converter takes the .xlsx as it is.

QWhat if my statement is a PDF, not a QIF?

Then this is the wrong starting point. A PDF bank statement converts to CSV with our bank statement converter, which reads the printed statement itself. If the PDF needs to go into Quicken, the PDF to QIF converter does that in one step.

QWhat is the best QIF to CSV converter?

The one that keeps your splits and your accounts apart. Paid desktop tools sell a one-off licence, usually in the tens of dollars, and suit batch work. For one file or a few, check two things on any free tool: do split lines survive as rows, and does a multi-account export get an Account column. Those are where QIF conversions usually fail.
